ABU Hosts International Conference On African Indigenous Languages

Ahmadu Bello University (ABU) hosted an international conference focusing on African Indigenous languages’ pivotal role in fostering development.

The conference, themed “Indigenous African Languages as Instruments for Viable Development,” drew Scholars, Researchers and Stakeholders from across Africa.

Organized by ABU’s Department of African Languages and Cultures, the event aimed to promote linguistic diversity, cultural preservation and socioeconomic growth.

Distinguished guests included HRH Emir of Daura, Alhaji Umar Faruq Umar, who officially opened the conference, the Emir of Zazzau, representatives of Kaduna and Katsina governors, renowned African language scholars and ABU Vice-Chancellor Prof. Kabiru Bala who was represented by the DVC Admin Prof. Ahmed Doko as the host.

Prof. Abdallah Uba Adamu delivered the keynote presentation, “Nation, Language and National Identity in Nigerian and Nigerien Hausa Rap Music,” underscoring language’s significance in shaping national unity.

The conference facilitated meaningful discussions on language preservation, education and cultural exchange, with scholars sharing insights into leveraging African languages for sustainable development.

Subsequent sessions enabled in-depth exploration of language education, cultural heritage and community engagement. The conference reinforced ABU’s commitment to advancing African languages and cultures, recognizing their vital role in the continent’s future.
