EPISODE 8
Her Life, Her Place in Nigeria’s Second Republic and the Lessons We Can Learn
Nigeria’s history is shaped not only by its presidents and political institutions but also by the people who formed part of important periods in the country’s development. Among them are the women who served as First Ladies and whose lives offer insights into the social and family dimensions of national leadership.
In this eighth episode of Lessons from the Lives of Great Nigerian Women, Alfijir Labarai examines the life of Hajiya Hadiza Shehu Shagari, widow of former Nigerian President Alhaji Shehu Usman Aliyu Shagari and a former First Lady during the Second Republic.
This report examines the available historical record of her life, her position during her husband’s presidency, what was reported following her death, and the lessons that can responsibly be drawn from the information available.
1. WHO WAS HAJIYA HADIZA SHEHU SHAGARI?
Hajiya Hadiza Shehu Shagari, also known as Hadiza Dawaiya Shagari, was a Nigerian public figure and the wife of former President Shehu Shagari.
The National Library of Nigeria identifies her as a former First Lady of Nigeria from 1979 to 1983. Its historical record gives her birth year as 1940 or 1941 and records her death on 12 August 2021. <Cite refs={[“turn863981search0″,”turn863981search1”]}/>
Available accounts indicate that she married Shehu Shagari in 1957. However, detailed information about her education, professional activities before her husband became president, and her personal initiatives is limited in the sources reviewed for this report.
For that reason, this report does not attribute specific projects or achievements to her without supporting evidence.
2. HER PLACE IN NIGERIA’S SECOND REPUBLIC
On 1 October 1979, Nigeria returned to civilian government after years of military rule. Alhaji Shehu Shagari became the country’s first democratically elected president of the Second Republic, serving until 31 December 1983, when the military overthrew his administration. <Cite refs={[“turn863981search6″,”turn863981search3”]}/>
During this period, Hajiya Hadiza held the position of First Lady. Her place in history is therefore connected to a significant period in Nigeria’s political development, when the country was operating under a civilian democratic system.
It is important, however, to distinguish her position as the president’s wife from the policies and actions of the government itself. She should not automatically be credited with government achievements or held responsible for its challenges without evidence of her direct involvement.
3. LIFE CLOSE TO THE SEAT OF POWER
The position of First Lady can involve public representation, attendance at official functions and interaction with members of society. However, the responsibilities and activities of First Ladies have differed over time, and not every First Lady has led the same types of programmes.
The sources reviewed for this report do not provide sufficient documented evidence to establish a comprehensive list of charitable initiatives, educational programmes or community-development projects personally led by Hajiya Hadiza Shehu Shagari.
This absence of detailed documentation does not prove that she made no contribution to public life. It means that further evidence, including archival records, interviews and reliable contemporary reports, would be needed to describe such contributions accurately.
4. HER DEATH AND THE TRIBUTES THAT FOLLOWED
Hajiya Hadiza Shehu Shagari died on 12 August 2021, at the age of 80. Contemporary news reports, citing a statement issued by her family, said she died after battling COVID-19 complications at an isolation centre in Gwagwalada, Abuja. Her funeral prayer was held at the National Mosque in Abuja. <Cite refs={[“turn863981search5″,”turn863981search7″,”turn863981search8”]}/>
Following her death, former President Muhammadu Buhari expressed condolences to the Shagari family. In the statement reported by Punch Newspapers, Buhari described her as a pillar of strength and support who held the family together while her husband served the nation. <Cite refs={[“turn863981search4″,”turn863981search11”]}/>
This description was part of a condolence message and should be understood as the tribute of the person who issued it, rather than an independent assessment of her entire life.
Nevertheless, the tribute highlights the importance often attached to family support during periods of demanding public service.
5. LESSONS FROM HER LIFE
Lesson One: The importance of family support
The condolence message following her death emphasised the support she provided to her family. This reminds us that family care and mutual support can be important parts of a person’s life, even when those contributions do not receive extensive public documentation.
Lesson Two: Public position is not the same as personal achievement
Holding a position close to the centre of government does not, by itself, establish that a person led particular programmes or achieved specific outcomes. Such claims should be supported by evidence of the individual’s direct involvement.
Lesson Three: Women’s histories deserve proper documentation
Historical records about some former First Ladies focus mainly on their husbands’ political careers. This highlights the importance of preserving women’s own experiences, activities, views and contributions through interviews, official records, photographs and archival materials.
Lesson Four: Respecting history requires accuracy
Respect for a historical figure does not require inventing achievements that have not been documented. Equally, a shortage of records should not be treated as proof that the person made no contribution. Responsible historical writing should state what is known and clearly identify what remains uncertain.
Lesson Five: A leader’s spouse should not automatically be held responsible for the government
The history of a president’s spouse should be examined separately from the administration led by the president. Without evidence of direct involvement, it would be inaccurate to attribute all government achievements or failures to the First Lady.
6. WHAT THE RESEARCH ESTABLISHES — AND WHAT REMAINS UNCLEAR
The sources reviewed establish several key facts about Hajiya Hadiza Shehu Shagari: her identity, her position as First Lady from 1979 to 1983, her death on 12 August 2021, and the family’s announcement concerning the circumstances of her death.
However, the available sources provide limited detail about her education, professional life and specific public initiatives. Further research would be necessary before making detailed claims about programmes or achievements personally associated with her.
This distinction matters because the purpose of historical reporting is not simply to produce a lengthy account. It is to present information fairly, accurately and in proportion to the available evidence.
Hajiya Hadiza Shehu Shagari remains part of Nigeria’s history through her position as First Lady during the Second Republic. Her story provides an opportunity to reflect on family support, the responsibilities associated with public life and the importance of preserving women’s histories.
The central lesson of this episode is that responsible history depends on truth, fairness and evidence. Where information is incomplete, that limitation should be acknowledged rather than filled with speculation.
Alfijir Labarai will continue examining the lives of notable Nigerian women, documenting the available historical record and identifying lessons that readers can draw from their experiences.
