WHY IS CEmONC SO IMPORTANT?
When a pregnant woman develops a life-threatening complication, timely access to emergency healthcare can mean the difference between life and death for both mother and baby.
This is where Comprehensive Emergency Obstetric and Newborn Care — CEmONC — becomes critical.
CEmONC is a system of emergency care for pregnant women, women in labour and newborns. It includes critical services such as Caesarean sections, blood transfusion and emergency care for newborns experiencing complications after birth.
In Nigeria, the Federal Government has identified the reduction of maternal and newborn deaths as an important priority in the health sector.
Over the years, Nigeria has strengthened Basic Emergency Obstetric and Newborn Care (BEmONC) and CEmONC, while newer initiatives such as MAMII, NHSRII and CEmONC-FTHIS have placed additional focus on improving access to emergency maternal and newborn care.
But one major question remains:
Are these government policies working as intended in the hospitals where women actually seek emergency care?
Do CEmONC facilities have the required health workers, equipment, blood supplies and capacity to perform emergency Caesarean sections?
And if a woman develops a life-threatening complication at night, can she receive the care she needs on time?
These are some of the questions Alfijir Labarai will investigate.
We will begin at the Federal Government level, examining the policies, funding, selected health facilities and equipment provided under the various programmes.
From there, the investigation will move to the states.
Eventually, we will come to Kano State to examine what is happening on the ground.
From Abuja to Kano.
From policy documents to hospitals.
From promises to reality.
This is the beginning of Alfijir Labarai’s investigation into CEmONC in Nigeria.
