Something important is happening in New York and Nigeria should not watch from a distance.
The 81st United Nations General Assembly has placed a powerful question before the world: Can institutions regain the trust of the people they were created to serve?
Its theme, “Restoring Trust, Managing Transformation: A United Nations That Delivers for All,” is more than diplomatic language. It is an admission that the world is experiencing conflicts, widening inequality, climate pressures, technological disruption and declining confidence in institutions.
But there is a deeper message here.
Trust cannot be restored by speeches alone. It is restored when institutions deliver. It is restored when a child receives quality education, when a young person finds opportunity, when healthcare is accessible, when businesses can survive, and when citizens believe that public institutions are working for them.
The UNGA 81 agenda also places the Right to Development firmly in the spotlight, 40 years after the UN adopted its Declaration on the Right to Development. The declaration recognises development as a right in which people should participate, contribute and share in economic, social, cultural and political progress.
This should make us pause.
For Nigeria, development must not remain a collection of impressive policies, programmes and budget figures. The real question is whether ordinary citizens can feel development in their homes, communities and businesses.
The world is talking.
The question is: are we listening?
And if we are listening, what are we going to do differently?
