The Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) continues to combine revenue collection with efforts to combat smuggling, the illegal movement of prohibited goods, drug trafficking and other activities that threaten national security, public health and legitimate businesses.
Last week, Alfijir Labarai examined the anti-smuggling activities of the Kano/Jigawa Area Command, including the command’s reported revenue collection of N88.925 billion between January and early September 2026, as well as intercepted and seized goods with a combined Duty Paid Value of about N2.159 billion.
This week, our investigation takes a different direction:
What happens after Customs intercepts goods or arrests suspected smugglers?
A NEW DEVELOPMENT IN KANO
On 16 September 2026, three suspects linked to the interception of 48 endangered wild animals along the Kano–Daura route on 25 August were arraigned before the Federal High Court in Kano.
The suspects are facing allegations relating to conspiracy, possession and trafficking of protected wildlife.
The animals intercepted included chimpanzees, gorillas, caracal wild cats, red patas monkeys, bush babies and several species of birds.
The three suspects pleaded not guilty. The court adjourned the matter to 7 October 2026 for consideration of their bail applications and further proceedings.
The development provides an important example of what can happen after an interception: a case may move from the point of seizure to investigation and eventually to the courts.
WHAT HAPPENS TO SEIZED GOODS?
This is one of the key questions Alfijir Labarai is examining.
When Customs intercepts prohibited or restricted goods:
How are the goods secured and documented?
When are they transferred to other relevant agencies?
What happens to unregistered medicines after they are handed over to NAFDAC?
How are prohibited goods prevented from returning to the market?
And where a court case is involved, what happens to the seized items while the legal process continues?
These questions are important because an interception is only one stage of the enforcement process.
KANO/JIGAWA: BEYOND REVENUE COLLECTION
The Kano/Jigawa Area Command has continued to report seizures involving different categories of goods, including foreign rice, spaghetti, macaroni, cooking oil, soaps, vehicles and other restricted or prohibited items.
The command has also reported the interception of large quantities of unregistered medicines, some of which were handed over to NAFDAC for further regulatory action.
The activities raise two connected issues: protecting the public from potentially harmful or prohibited products, while also ensuring that legitimate traders who comply with import regulations are not unnecessarily affected.
CUSTOMS AND TRADE FACILITATION
The role of the Nigeria Customs Service is not limited to stopping smuggling.
Its responsibilities also include revenue collection and trade facilitation.
The service has increasingly adopted digital systems and technology to improve cargo processing, revenue monitoring and customs procedures.
At the Kano Free Trade Zone, Customs has reported significant revenue collection since the beginning of 2026, with digital monitoring tools being used to track revenue performance.
The broader question is how these systems are translating into faster and more transparent trade procedures for legitimate businesses.
THE BIGGER PICTURE
Recent Customs operations across different parts of Nigeria have involved seizures of medicines, petroleum products, food items, vehicles and other prohibited or restricted goods.
These operations demonstrate the wide range of responsibilities carried out by Customs at borders and within the country.
But enforcement does not end when goods are displayed after a seizure.
There are further stages involving documentation, investigation, prosecution where necessary, regulatory agencies, court proceedings and the final disposal or handling of seized goods in accordance with the law.
WHAT ALFIJIR LABARAI WILL INVESTIGATE

Importation or movement of goods → inspection → interception → seizure → investigation → prosecution where applicable → court decision → final action on the seized goods.
We will also examine how Customs balances enforcement with the rights of legitimate businesses and suspects who remain entitled to due process until a court determines their case.
