NAFDAC INTENSIFIES CRACKDOWN ON SUBSTANDARD PRODUCTS, STRENGTHENS CONSUMER HEALTH PROTECTION
The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has intensified efforts to combat counterfeit, substandard and unwholesome products in Nigeria, while strengthening measures aimed at protecting public health.
This week, key developments include a new collaboration between NAFDAC and the Public Complaints Commission, a public warning over a suspected counterfeit toothpaste, and an investigation into a suspected poisoning incident that resulted in deaths in Ondo State.
1. NAFDAC STRENGTHENS PARTNERSHIP WITH PCC TO COMBAT SUBSTANDARD PRODUCTS
NAFDAC has pledged to strengthen its collaboration with the Public Complaints Commission (PCC) to curb the circulation of food products, medicines and other regulated products that fail to meet required safety and quality standards.
The agency said the partnership would help facilitate the receipt of complaints, investigations and appropriate enforcement actions against individuals and businesses that violate regulations affecting public health.
2. NAFDAC WARNS PUBLIC OVER SUSPECTED COUNTERFEIT TOOTHPASTE
NAFDAC has warned members of the public about a toothpaste branded ORACIRE+, which the agency said is being distributed in Nigeria with packaging similar to that of the registered ORACARE+ Toothpaste.
The suspected counterfeit product was discovered during a market surveillance operation at Ojuwoye Market in Mushin, Lagos.
NAFDAC said the similarity in the packaging and appearance of the two products could make it difficult for consumers to distinguish between the genuine product and the suspected counterfeit.
The agency also stated that the identity, ingredients and quality of the suspected product had not yet been established, and directed its officials across the country to investigate the distribution and circulation of the product.
3. NAFDAC: SOME COUNTERFEIT PRODUCTS ARE NOW BEING MANUFACTURED IN NIGERIA
NAFDAC has disclosed that its investigations indicate that some counterfeiters linked to business networks from China have begun establishing local production and distribution channels for counterfeit products in Nigeria.
The Director of Investigation and Enforcement at NAFDAC, Martins Iluyomade, said there has been a shift from the importation of counterfeit products from abroad to their production and distribution within Nigeria.
The agency said investigations had led to arrests and seizures in Kano, Sokoto, Delta and Onitsha in Anambra State, particularly involving oral care products.
NAFDAC also disclosed that 64 convictions were secured in counterfeit-related offences between June 2025 and June 2026.
4. NAFDAC RECEIVED 225 COMPLAINTS IN AUGUST
NAFDAC has disclosed that it received 225 complaints from members of the public in August 2026 concerning products suspected to be counterfeit.
The Director-General of NAFDAC, Professor Mojisola Adeyeye, said the agency receives more than 200 complaints every month, adding that information provided by members of the public helps the agency identify locations where illegal activities may be taking place.
5. NAFDAC, NDLEA AND WHO JOIN INVESTIGATION INTO SUSPECTED POISONING INCIDENT IN ONDO
NAFDAC, the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) and the World Health Organization (WHO) have joined investigations into an illness and deaths reported in parts of Odigbo Local Government Area of Ondo State.
Reports from health authorities indicated that 29 out of 60 suspected cases had resulted in deaths.
However, Ondo State authorities stressed that laboratory results confirming the specific substance responsible for the deaths were still pending.
The incident is therefore being treated as a suspected case pending scientific confirmation, while investigations continue.
6. NAFDAC REITERATES THAT SOCIAL MEDIA CLAIMS ARE NOT ENOUGH TO CONFIRM COUNTERFEIT PRODUCTS
NAFDAC has reiterated the importance of scientific investigation before confirming that a food product, medicine or other health-related product is counterfeit or harmful.
The agency said complaints and information circulating on social media could serve as important leads for initiating investigations, but should not be treated as final evidence until appropriate verification and scientific assessment have been conducted.
The agency therefore advised members of the public to report suspected products to the relevant authorities rather than relying on or spreading unverified information.
7. MAY TO JULY: 7,210 SUBSTANDARD PRODUCTS SEIZED ACROSS NIGERIA
As a follow-up to last week’s report, NAFDAC disclosed that it removed 7,210 non-compliant products from circulation following inspections of 6,233 locations across all 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory between May and July 2026.
This was not a new operation conducted this week, but it demonstrates the scale of NAFDAC’s surveillance and enforcement activities across the country.
WHAT CONSUMERS NEED TO KNOW
Consumers have an important role to play in protecting their own health and the health of the wider community.
Before purchasing food, medicines, toothpaste, cosmetics or other products regulated by NAFDAC:
• Check the product packaging and information carefully.
• Avoid products suspected to be counterfeit or products with unclear or incomplete information.
• Where applicable, verify the authenticity of the product’s registration.
• Pay attention to differences in the product’s name, packaging or trademark compared with the genuine product.
• Report suspicious products to NAFDAC or other relevant authorities.
• Do not circulate allegations as confirmed facts until they have been verified by the appropriate authorities.
