The Kano State House of Assembly has officially passed the Kano State Private and Voluntary Institutions Board (Amendment) Bill, 2026 (1448 AH), which brings in significant reforms aimed at enhancing the regulation and management of private and voluntary educational institutions throughout the state.
This important bill was approved during Tuesday’s plenary session after the House Committee on Education presented its report, which had been shaped by public hearings and extensive discussions with stakeholders.
After the bill’s passage, the Speaker of the Kano State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Speaker, praised the members for their active participation in the legislative process. He emphasized that this amendment is all about improving the board’s administration and protecting the interests of both parents and students.
One of the key changes in the amended law is the establishment of the Office of the Executive Secretary, aimed at boosting the effective management and administration of the Kano State Private and Voluntary Institutions Board.
Additionally, the new legislation requires private and voluntary schools to get approval from the relevant authorities before raising tuition or other fees. This provision is designed to shield parents from sudden and unjustified fee increases while promoting transparency and accountability in how private educational institutions operate in the state.
With this bill’s passage, the Assembly anticipates a stronger oversight of private and voluntary schools, better governance in the sector, and a commitment to ensuring that decisions impacting parents and students undergo proper regulatory review.
