From student union politics to grassroots mobilization across Kano State, Comrade Magaji Kabiru Gulu has continued to build a growing reputation as one of the emerging youth voices with strong political reach, student influence, and organizational capacity in Northern Nigeria.
Across campuses, youth groups, political circles, and community structures, Gulu’s name has become associated with mobilization, coordination, and youth engagement. Associates describe him as a strategic organizer with an extensive network that cuts across students, political stakeholders, grassroots actors, and development-oriented groups.
Born in 1995 in Gulu Town, Rimin Gado Local Government Area of Kano State, Magaji Kabiru Gulu began his educational journey at Gulu Central Primary School before proceeding to Gulu Junior Secondary School between 2001 and 2009. He later attended Government Secondary School Bichi, where he obtained his Senior Secondary School Certificate Examination (SSCE).
His leadership profile started gaining attention during his studies at the College of Arts, Science and Remedial Studies between 2015 and 2016. While there, he simultaneously served as Class Representative and Chairman of the Class Representatives Forum, becoming one of the most visible student coordinators within the institution.
Colleagues from the period recall his ability to unite students, engage lecturers, and coordinate activities effectively, qualities that later shaped his influence in student politics and youth mobilization.
In 2017, he gained admission into Bayero University Kano to study Zoology in the Department of Biological Sciences under the Faculty of Life Sciences, College of Natural and Pharmaceutical Sciences, graduating in 2023.
At Bayero University Kano, Gulu quickly emerged as one of the active figures within the student community. He served as Senator representing students of the Department of Biological Sciences (BIOSSA), where he became known for defending students’ interests and building alliances across departments and faculties.
His political strength became more visible when he contested for the position of Treasurer of the Students’ Union Government (SUG) and secured victory with one of the highest votes recorded during the election. The outcome further cemented his standing among students and campus political stakeholders.
He later joined the race for the position of President of the Students’ Union Government, a contest many observers described as highly competitive. Although the election was eventually cancelled before the polls, Gulu remained one of the strongest contenders, with significant support across student constituencies.
Beyond campus, his activities expanded into regional youth and student engagement platforms. As Director of Peace, Integration and Reconciliation under the National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS), Zone A, he worked with student leaders and stakeholders across Northern Nigeria to promote peaceful coexistence, dialogue, and collaboration among students.
His growing influence within youth leadership circles also pushed him into national youth politics. In 2025, he contested for the position of Vice President (Northwest) of the National Youth Council of Nigeria (NYCN), further strengthening his profile within youth advocacy and leadership structures.
Currently pursuing a Master of Science (MSc) degree in Parasitology at Bayero University Kano, Gulu combines academic advancement with political and social engagement. Associates say his decision to continue his education reflects his interest in research, public health, and intellectual development alongside leadership.
Away from academics and student politics, many political observers identify mobilization as Gulu’s strongest area of influence.
Over the years, he has built a formidable grassroots structure among students and youths across Kano State. Through consistent engagement, meetings, and coordination efforts, he has maintained relationships with political actors, community leaders, youth groups, and student organizations across different divides.
As Chairman of the Murtala Sule Garo Youths and Students Mobilization Forum, Gulu led campaigns focused on political participation, youth awareness, and grassroots organization. Under his leadership, the forum became one of the active youth-driven support structures within Kano political circles.
Ahead of the 2023 general elections, the movement expanded into the Gawuna/Garo Youths and Students Mobilization Forum, where he continued playing a frontline role in mobilizing support for the All Progressives Congress and its candidates in Kano State.
The structure has since evolved into the Abba/Garo Youth and Students Mobilization Forum, aimed at supporting the advancement of the Kano First Agenda through youth participation and grassroots engagement.
Political associates say one of Gulu’s defining qualities is his ability to maintain relationships across political, academic, and social circles. His network among students, political stakeholders, youth leaders, and grassroots communities continues to expand, making him one of the young mobilizers steadily gaining recognition in Kano’s political landscape.
From student representation and peacebuilding to youth coordination and political mobilization, Comrade Magaji Kabiru Gulu has steadily positioned himself as a visible figure within the next generation of youth leadership in Northern Nigeria.
For many of his supporters and associates, his story reflects persistence, grassroots connection, political reach, and a growing capacity to influence youth participation in leadership and governance.
