The Kano State Government has inaugurated a Media and Information Policy Committee in a move aimed at enhancing transparency, accountability, and effective communication in governance.

Speaking during the inauguration, the Secretary to the State Government, Alhaji Umar Faruq Ibrahim, said the committee was carefully constituted with seasoned information managers and professionals tasked with developing a comprehensive policy framework for the state’s media and information sector.

He noted that the initiative reflects the administration’s broader commitment to establishing well-structured policies across all sectors to guide operations and improve service delivery.

According to him, the committee’s terms of reference include reviewing transition committee documents to develop a robust policy framework, organizing stakeholders’ engagements to deliberate on proposals, and drafting a comprehensive Media and Information Policy document. He added that members are also expected to liaise with relevant government agencies, media practitioners, and civil society organizations in the course of their assignment.

In his remarks, the Commissioner for Information and Internal Affairs, Comrade Ibrahim Abdullahi Waiya, who chairs the committee, underscored the importance of the initiative in addressing longstanding gaps in the sector.

He observed that several critical policies guiding media and information management in the state have either not been formally established or properly endorsed, a situation he said has limited effective engagement within the information ecosystem.

Waiya stressed that the development of a well-defined policy would align Kano with global best practices, while strengthening accountability, transparency, and professionalism in government–media relations.

He added that although the state has maintained a cordial and media-friendly environment, the new policy would help formalize and deepen collaboration between the government and media stakeholders.

The commissioner further explained that the committee was deliberately composed to ensure inclusivity, drawing members from media practice, academia, veteran information managers, and other key stakeholders to harness diverse expertise.

He expressed confidence that the committee would deliver a comprehensive and implementable policy framework that would not only guide government communication but also support the growth and development of media institutions in the state.

The committee has Comrade Ibrahim Abdullahi Waiya as Chairman, with Alhaji Mohammed Danyaro serving as Co-Chairman. Other members include Alhaji Ahmad Aminu, Mohammad Garba, Alhaji Sunusi Bature Dawakin Tofa, Mallam Mukhtari Magaji, Malam Ado Saidu Warawa, Mallam Salisu Ibrahim Fagge, Dr. Abubakar Shehu Minjibir, Dr. Halima Kamilu, Hajiya Aishatu Sule, Dr. Hassan Ya’u, Comrade Sulaiman Abdullahi Dederi, and Alhaji Bello Danmaisoro.

Sani Abba Yola will serve as Secretary, while Mallam Auwalu Sa’idu Mu’azu, Dr. Saminu Umar Rijiyar Zaki, and Aliyu Muhammad Sani will serve as Co-Secretaries.
