The Kano Online Media Chapel (KOMC) has conferred a prestigious Award of Excellence on the Commissioner for Information and Internal Affairs, Comrade Ibrahim Abdullahi Waiya, in recognition of his outstanding leadership, unwavering support for digital journalism, and commitment to responsible information management in Kano State.

The award, presented during a formal engagement with stakeholders in the media sector, underscores KOMC’s appreciation of the Commissioner’s pivotal role in strengthening the partnership between government and online media practitioners, a move widely acknowledged as redefining information dissemination in the state.

Speaking at the presentation, the Chairman of the Chapel, Comrade Abubakar Abdulkadir Dangambo, described Waiya as a bridge-builder and reform-driven public servant whose open-door policy has fostered mutual trust, professionalism, and ethical conduct among journalists. He noted that the Commissioner’s relationship with online media operators has been marked by respect, inclusivity, and a shared vision for a peaceful and well-informed Kano.

“We earnestly appreciate the efforts of the journalist-friendly Commissioner for Information for passionately energizing and motivating practicing journalists to imbibe the spirit of professionalism, ethical responsibility, and innovative storytelling in the discharge of their duties”

Dangambo further highlighted that Waiya’s passion for sanitising the digital media space has translated into tangible actions, particularly his strong backing for capacity-building programmes aimed at training online journalists on the ethics, regulations, and responsibilities of modern journalism.

According to him, these interventions have significantly contributed to reducing misinformation, fake news, and sensational reporting within the state’s digital ecosystem.

He added that the Commissioner’s efforts align with global best practices in media governance, where information managers serve not just as spokespersons but as custodians of truth, stability, and social cohesion.

In a related development, KOMC also presented a Special Award of Honour to the Governor of Kano State, Alhaji Abba Kabir Yusuf, in recognition of his administration’s support for press freedom and media development.

The awards were formally presented on Thursday, 15th January, 2026, marking another milestone in the evolving relationship between the Kano State Government and the online media community.

The event reaffirmed KOMC’s resolve to continue promoting excellence, accountability, and professionalism in digital journalism, while celebrating public office holders who demonstrate genuine commitment to transparent and responsible governance.
