Eleven years have passed since one of the darkest Fridays in Nigeria’s fight against insurgency. The attack on Kano’s Grand Central Mosque on 28 November 2014 remains a brutal reminder of Boko Haram’s capacity for mass murder and the urgent need for sustained, people-centered security reforms.

As families remember their loved ones and survivors continue to rebuild their lives, the tragedy stands as both a national wound and a call to action.

On this day—Friday, 28 November 2014—Boko Haram bombed Kano’s Grand Central Mosque, killing at least 130 people and injuring more than 135 others. Today marks eleven years since one of the deadliest attacks carried out by the insurgent group, which has waged a ruthless campaign marked by violence, abductions, and impunity.

During the attack, gunmen detonated three bombs and opened fire on worshippers gathered for prayers at the main mosque. Inside the mosque afterward, bullet holes scarred the pillars, and the blood of suicide bombers remained splattered across the walls, reaching even into the dome of the grand structure.

One of the attackers drove a vehicle into the crowd of worshippers, leaving behind a horrifying scene of blood and dismembered body parts.

Since that tragic day, Boko Haram and other armed groups in northern Nigeria have continued to target churches, mosques, markets, religious leaders, schools, and government buildings. Women and girls remain particularly vulnerable—still facing abduction, rape, and forced sexual slavery at the hands of these groups.

The Nigerian authorities must intensify efforts to protect the lives of all citizens and ensure that those responsible for such atrocities are identified, arrested, and brought to justice.

The 2014 Kano mosque attack occurred during Friday Jumu’ah prayers, when thousands typically gather, amplifying the scale of casualties. The mosque targeted is directly linked to the Emir of Kano, making the attack both a symbolic and strategic strike against religious authority in the region.

The incident triggered widespread outrage, sparking protests and calls for comprehensive security reform across northern Nigeria.

In the years since, Nigeria has launched multiple military operations against Boko Haram and ISWAP, yet attacks on civilians remain a recurring threat.
