In every thriving democracy, the right to vote is more than a constitutional provision it is a sacred pillar of citizen empowerment, a tool through which people shape the destiny of their society. It is in this spirit that the recent initiative by the Kano State Government to ensure that no eligible citizen is left behind in the voter registration process deserves the highest commendation.
This move is not only timely but also deeply reflective of a government committed to inclusivity, democratic integrity, and the principle of participatory governance.
A STRATEGIC TASK FORCE FOR DEMOCRATIC MOBILISATION
On Friday, 22nd August 2025, the Secretary to the State Government (SSG), Alhaji Farouk Umar Ibrahim, on behalf of His Excellency Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf, inaugurated the High-Powered Task Force Committee on Voter Registration Mobilisation.
This is not just another bureaucratic body, it is a thoughtfully constituted coalition of 37 distinguished stakeholders drawn from across Kano State’s societal spectrum traditional leaders, civil society organisations, youth groups, and representatives of persons with disabilities. This intentional diversity signals a clear message no voice will be sidelined, no group forgotten.
DEMONSTRATING URGENCY AND COMMITMENT
Remarkably, within just 24 hours of its formation, the task force chaired by Comrade Ibrahim Abdullahi Waiya, Honourable Commissioner for Information and Internal Affairs paid a strategic advocacy visit to the Resident Electoral Commissioner of INEC, Ambassador Abdul Zango.
This swift move exemplifies the task force’s seriousness, signalling a strong commitment to strengthening institutional collaboration, enhancing public engagement, and improving the accessibility and credibility of the voter registration process across the state.
CONFRONTING HARD TRUTHS WITH EMPATHY AND ACTION
One of the most sobering revelations brought to light is that over 367,000 Permanent Voter Cards (PVCs) remain uncollected in Kano State many since 2020. These are not just idle statistics each unclaimed PVC represents a silenced voice, a missed opportunity, a citizen left at the margins of democracy.
What makes the committee’s intervention especially admirable is not merely its acknowledgment of this challenge, but the empathetic urgency with which it is being addressed. Their commitment to re-engaging citizens in reclaiming their PVCs is more than a logistical mission, it is an act of civic healing and democratic restoration.
MORE THAN MOBILISATION A MODEL OF INCLUSIVE GOVERNANCE
Beyond mere awareness campaigns, the task force has been charged with identifying real challenges to mass registration and offering practical, data-driven solutions. Their advocacy for the establishment of additional registration centres, particularly in emerging residential areas and underserved communities, is both pragmatic and impactful.
This is democracy nurtured from the grassroots responsive, inclusive, and people-oriented. The government is not merely encouraging citizens to register, it is actively dismantling the barriers that have historically stood in their way.
A CALL TO ACTION FOR THE PEOPLE OF KANO
To the resilient people of Kano State especially the youth, women, elderly, and persons with disabilities this is your moment. Voter registration is not just an administrative procedure, it is a statement of identity, a declaration of relevance, a bold claim to your rightful place in the democratic process.
KANO SETTING THE PACE FOR NATIONAL REPLICATION
In an era where disenchantment with political systems runs deep, Kano State’s human-centered, action-oriented approach offers a glimmer of hope. It stands as a potential model for other states across Nigeria demonstrating that with the right political will and citizen engagement, democracy can be revived from the ground up.
By prioritizing access, transparency, and inclusion, Kano is not just preparing for an election. It is laying the foundation for a future in which citizens trust, engage with, and believe in their government once more.
CONCLUSION: A RENEWED SOCIAL CONTRACT
This initiative goes beyond the mechanics of voter registration. It is a renewal of the social contract a conscious effort to bridge the gap between government and governed. It is about restoring dignity, rebuilding trust, and rekindling hope in democratic participation.
As the task force continues its vital work, let us all lend our support. Let every eligible citizen be counted. Let every voice find its place.
And let history record that in 2025, Kano State stood tall and no one was left behind.
