The Secretary to the State Government (SSG), Alhaji Umar Farouq Ibrahim, has emphasized the need for strong collaboration between the newly established Ministry of Housing Development, the State Ministry of Works, and the Kano Urban Planning and Development Authority (KNUPDA). He noted that such synergy would be instrumental in combating crimes linked to poor urban planning, including illegal sales of land and properties—commonly referred to as “awon igiya.”

The SSG made this call today in his office when he received the report of  implementation committee  on the successful take-off of the Ministry of Housing Development in Kano State.

Alhaji Umar Farouq Ibrahim observed that rapid and unregulated urban growth poses both security and social challenges. He pointed out that residents frequently encounter unfamiliar faces in their communities, particularly during early morning prayers, stressing the need for community identification systems as an added security measure.

While acknowledging that Kano’s attractiveness to people from diverse backgrounds is a positive sign of economic potential, the SSG emphasized that the influx must be properly regulated to ensure it yields socio-economic benefits rather than contributing to insecurity.

He described the creation of the Ministry of Housing Development as a long-overdue and welcome development that will help curb crimes such as phone snatching, killings, and other related offenses through effective regulation of settlements.

Commending the committee responsible for the ministry’s establishment, the SSG said:

> “His Excellency is deeply concerned about the state’s housing challenges, which is why this ministry was created. The report will receive prompt attention, and its recommendations will be treated with urgency.”

In his remarks, the Chairman of the Committee and Commissioner for Housing Development, Hon. Arc. Ibrahim Yakubu Adamu, expressed appreciation to committee members for their commitment, which earned them government commendation. He noted that their success could serve as a stepping stone to future assignments for the state’s development.

He further conveyed his gratitude to the present administration under His Excellency, Alhaji Abba Kabir Yusuf, for the confidence reposed in the committee.
