The Dangote Ultra-Modern Skills Acquisition Centre (DUMSAC) in Kano was once celebrated as a bold investment in the future of Northern Nigeria’s youth. Established through a partnership between the Kano State Government and business magnate Aliko Dangote, the multi-billion-naira facility was designed to provide modern vocational training that would equip thousands of young people with employable skills.

Today, however, the centre remains largely underutilized, raising concerns about the fate of an initiative that was meant to transform lives and stimulate regional economic growth.
The intervention of the North West Development Commission (NWDC) has been proposed as a practical pathway to revive the centre and restore its original vision. With its mandate to drive development across the seven North-West states, the commission under Prof. Shehu Abdullahi Ma’aji is well positioned to assume stewardship of the facility and reposition it as a hub for skills, innovation and entrepreneurship. Such a move could unlock the centre’s vast potential and ensure it becomes a catalyst for sustainable development across the region.

DUMSAC was conceived as a modern vocational training institution offering courses in high-demand trades such as electrical installation, carpentry, ICT, fashion design, plumbing, solar technology and hospitality services.

At full capacity, the centre has the potential to train hundreds of youths every cycle and produce graduates with industry-relevant certifications. Unfortunately, operational challenges—including funding constraints and administrative bottlenecks—have slowed the centre’s activities, leaving a valuable public asset far from achieving its intended impact.

Supporters of the proposed takeover believe the NWDC could introduce a strategic reform agenda that would modernize the training curriculum and align it with emerging sectors such as renewable energy, agribusiness and digital technology. By partnering with private sector players and development institutions, the commission could also attract technical expertise and investment necessary to reposition the centre as a competitive regional skills hub.

Another key component of the proposal is the introduction of innovative funding mechanisms. Beyond government allocations, the centre could explore crowdfunding initiatives, philanthropic contributions and international development grants to sustain its operations.

Revenue-generating activities such as contract services, production workshops and product marketing could also help the institution gradually achieve financial sustainability while giving trainees real-world industry experience.

Proponents also recommend the creation of an independent board of trustees comprising technocrats, academics and industry leaders from across the North-West. Such a governance structure would strengthen transparency, accountability and professional management of the facility, ensuring that it operates strictly in line with its development mandate.

If properly revitalized, the Dangote Ultra-Modern Skills Acquisition Centre could empower thousands of youths annually, reduce unemployment and stimulate entrepreneurship across the North-West region. The opportunity to transform the centre into a thriving engine of skills development and economic opportunity is one that policymakers cannot afford to ignore. With strategic leadership and collaboration among stakeholders, the dream that inspired DUMSAC can still be fully realized.
