The Kano Patriotic Coalition of CSOs Forum (KPCF), a coalition of 310 Civil Society Organisations (CSOs) in Kano State, extends its profound sympathy and solidarity to marketers affected by the unfortunate fire incident at Singer Market. We acknowledge the immense pain, losses, and disruptions suffered by traders and their families whose livelihoods were impacted by this tragic event.
KPCF commends the Kano State Governor, Abba Kabir Yusuf, for his exemplary leadership, empathy, and hands-on presence at the scene. His prompt engagement with victims and relevant stakeholders reflects responsive governance and a strong commitment to the welfare of the people.
We also appreciate the timely intervention of the Federal Government of Nigeria through the donation of 5 billion to support affected marketers. In the same vein, KPCF applauds the Governors on the platform of the All Progressives Congress (APC), under the aegis of the APC Progressive Governors’ Forum, for their collective donation of N3 billion to the victims of the inferno. These gestures demonstrate national solidarity and a shared commitment to economic recovery and social protection.
KPCF further appreciates the contributions of private individuals and corporate organisations, and commends the professionalism, bravery, and coordinated response of all fire and emergency agencies involved particularly the Kano State Fire Service and the Federal Fire Service as well as other supporting security and emergency institutions, whose timely actions helped contain the fire and avert further devastation.
While acknowledging these commendable efforts, KPCF strongly urges the Kano State Government to constitute an independent and credible committee to ensure the transparent, equitable, and seamless distribution of relief funds to victims-free from rancour, favouritism, and corruption.
In addition, KPCF recommends the following measures:
1. The Kano State Government should enforce improved accessibility and safety standards within Singer Market and other markets across the state, including clearly demarcated emergency access routes.
2. The Government should ensure the provision of reliable water supply in all markets and across Kano State to facilitate immediate response to fire incidents.
3. Strategic investment should be made in advanced fire-fighting infrastructure, including the procurement of a fire-fighting helicopter, to enhance rapid response capacity and mitigate the impact of future fire outbreaks.
KPCF remains committed to constructive advocacy and partnership with government and stakeholders to promote accountability, disaster preparedness, and the protection of livelihoods in Kano State.
