The Lagos Zone 2 Police turn down a $100,000 bribe, approximately ₦174 million, offered by Patrick Akpoguma, a 28-year-old suspected internet fraudster, in a bid to secure his freedom.
Akpoguma, a Mechanical Engineering graduate, is accused of multiple cybercrimes, including romance scams, identity theft, hacking, cryptocurrency fraud, and alleged ties to rituals and cultism.
While speaking to journalists, the suspect confessed to his crimes and revealed that the bribe was an attempt to avoid prosecution.
“I felt too intelligent to work for a salary, which is why I turned to fraud three years ago,” Akpoguma admitted. “I’ve earned over $500,000 since then, owning properties in Lagos and Edo State and a GLE Benz worth ₦100 million. Once I defraud people and believe I’ve taken enough, I walk away without leaving them penniless.”
Assistant Inspector General (AIG) Adegoke Fayoade disclosed that the investigation began on November 7, 2024, following complaints from residents of Chevron Drive, Lekki, where the suspect resides.
According to AIG Fayoade, Akpoguma confessed to engaging in romance scams and cryptocurrency fraud. He often poses as a prominent Caucasian American, such as Colonel Matt Herbert, a U.S. Army officer supposedly on a peacekeeping mission in Iran, to defraud unsuspecting victims.
