A fire outbreak has destroyed parts of six houses used as plastic shops and storage facilities at Kofar Wambai Market in Kano State.
The incident occurred at about 9:43 p.m. on Friday, September 4, 2026, at Babban Layi, Yan Robobi section of the market.
The Kano State Fire Service said it received a distress call from one of its personnel, Principal Fire Superintendent Usman Idris Fagge, and immediately deployed firefighters from its headquarters and Rijiyar Zaki, Sabon Gari, Government House and Bompai stations.
The affected properties included Gidan Alhaji Sani, Gidan Sani Muhammad, Gidan Alhaji Kwa Kwa, Gidan Alhaji Shafi’u and Gidan Alhaji Sulaiman.
According to the Service, the fire started on the upper floor before spreading to the first and ground floors, affecting shops, stores and temporary structures.
Firefighters successfully contained the blaze and prevented it from spreading to other parts of the busy market.
The cause of the fire was traced to a solar power system.
The Director of the Kano State Fire Service, Alhaji Sani Anas, urged traders and residents to remain vigilant and adopt proper fire-safety measures.
He advised the public to install fire detectors, keep functional fire extinguishers at homes and business premises, and take necessary precautions to prevent fire outbreaks.
