The Wazobia Conflict Resolution and Peace Advocacy Initiative (WACORPAL) has honoured prominent Islamic scholar, Sheikh Ibrahim Khalil, with the Conflict Management Champion and Global Peace Ambassador awards in recognition of his contributions to peacebuilding, interfaith harmony, and national unity.
Speaking during the award presentation in Kano, Sheikh Ibrahim Khalil stressed the urgent need to instill patriotism in Nigerians, noting that many citizens have yet to fully appreciate the nation’s blessings, potential, and importance.
According to him, Nigeria’s greatest need today is unity. He recalled that the country was once known for its strong bonds of friendship and peaceful coexistence, but lamented that some individuals are now working to sow division among its people.
He urged Nigerians to embrace love for their country, saying national progress can only be achieved when citizens value and protect their homeland. Drawing a comparison with Rwanda, Sheikh Khalil noted that Nigeria had previously played a significant role in international peacekeeping efforts, underscoring the country’s capacity to promote peace beyond its borders.
He therefore called on Nigerians to work collectively towards sustaining peace at home, emphasizing that all humanity shares a common origin and should not allow religious or ethnic differences to divide them.
The Islamic scholar further stressed that no society can thrive in isolation, explaining that people depend on one another regardless of religion or background. He said mutual respect, compassion, and understanding remain the foundation of lasting peace and national development.
Quoting Islamic teachings, Sheikh Khalil said God created humanity in different tribes and communities so they could know and support one another rather than engage in conflict. He appealed to leaders and stakeholders to guide Nigerians towards peaceful coexistence, unity, and love for one another.
He also described WACORPAL as a credible organisation committed to strengthening national unity, promoting dialogue, and advancing peaceful conflict resolution across Nigeria.
Earlier, the President of the Wazobia Conflict Resolution and Peace Advocacy Initiative (WACORPAL), Amb. Dr. Garba Sulaiman, said the organisation selected Sheikh Ibrahim Khalil for the prestigious honours because of his consistent advocacy for enlightenment, moderation, and peaceful coexistence among Muslims, Christians, and the wider Nigerian society.
He added that the organisation identified a strong alignment between Sheikh Khalil’s lifelong commitment to peace and WACORPAL’s mission of fostering conflict resolution, reconciliation, and national cohesion, making him a deserving recipient of the awards.
