The Supreme Council for Shariah in Nigeria (SCSN) has expressed deep outrage and sorrow over the brutal killing of innocent citizens in Angwan Rukuba, Jos, Plateau State. The Council described the incident as a tragic reminder of how fragile human life remains in the country, stressing that such acts of violence continue to expose serious gaps in national security. It called on authorities to urgently move beyond expressions of sympathy and take concrete steps to prevent further bloodshed.
According to the Council, the recurring cycle of violence followed by routine condemnations from leaders is no longer acceptable. It emphasized that statements without action have become predictable and ineffective, urging government at all levels to fulfill its primary responsibility of protecting lives and property.
The SCSN insisted that what Nigeria needs now is strong political will and effective security operations capable of ending these senseless killings.
The Council also highlighted that Islam places great value on the sanctity of human life, regardless of religious or ethnic background. It referenced teachings from the Qurβan and the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him), which strongly condemn the unlawful killing of any individual. These teachings, the Council noted, clearly show that taking innocent life is not only a crime against humanity but also a grave sin before God.
Furthermore, the nature of the Angwan Rukuba attack was described as likely premeditated and coordinated, with the intention of triggering wider religious and communal conflict. The Council raised concerns about the involvement of both local and foreign actors who may be fueling violence through the supply of weapons, cross-border movements, and financial support for criminal networks. It stressed the need for intelligence-driven operations and regional cooperation to identify and dismantle such threats.
The SCSN extended its condolences to the government and people of Plateau State, as well as families affected by the tragedy. It also called on religious leaders and citizens to promote peace, reject incitement, and work together against forces seeking to divide the nation.
The Council concluded by urging all Nigerians to remain united, law-abiding, and committed to justice, emphasizing that the country must not continue on this dangerous path and that the time for decisive action is now.
