Open Letter to Governor Abba Gida Gida: Concerns Mount Over Conduct of Some Kano Appointees

With great respect, I greet you: Assalamu alaikum wa rahmatullahi wa barakatuhu. May Allah accept our acts of worship. Ameen.

Your Excellency, I recall the statement you made after returning to the APC. It was a powerful and deeply reflective remark, in which you said that one day Allah will hold you accountable and ask how you managed the wealth and trust of the people of Kano after they elected you as their governor.

Your Excellency, that statement resonated with me profoundly. It inspired me and strengthened my belief that every well-meaning citizen should contribute, in whatever way possible, toward helping you fulfill that responsibility and uphold the trust the people of Kano have placed in your leadership.

“Abba, You Are a Hero.”

I echo this praise often expressed by your supporters because it reflects the confidence many people have in your intentions. If you did not genuinely care about the welfare of the people of Kano, the public discourse in the state today would likely be very different. Instead of discussing progress and reform, many might have resigned themselves to the usual practice of pursuing personal gain.

Your Excellency, I mention these things first to acknowledge and commend the decisive step you took in dismissing the Head of the State Civil Service in pursuit of reforms within the system. Such actions show a willingness to correct what is not working. However, with due respect, it may also be necessary to look beyond that office and review the performance of other individuals appointed to assist you in carrying out the responsibilities of governance.

There is a saying: “The well provides water, but the bucket prevents people from drawing it.” In the same way, while your intentions may be sincere and your vision clear, the effectiveness of your administration ultimately depends on the conduct and dedication of those entrusted with implementing your policies.

While commending the governor for recently dismissing the Head of the State Civil Service as part of efforts to reform the system, the letter suggested that reforms should also extend to other officials appointed to manage various ministries and agencies. I critically argued that the success of any administration largely depends on the dedication and conduct of those entrusted with implementing government policies.

You appointed many individuals to different positions so they could support you in fulfilling the mandate given to you by the people. However, Your Excellency, the reality on the ground suggests that things are not always functioning as they should.

Before writing this letter, and in order to avoid making baseless claims, we visited several state ministries to observe how they are carrying out the duties entrusted to them. Sadly, what we saw raises concern. Some of those entrusted with these responsibilities appear to have drifted away from the standards expected of them, acting more in their own interest than in service to the public. When some are reminded that they have deviated from proper procedures, they respond by suggesting that their appointments were merely opportunities to benefit from office rather than to serve diligently.

It is for this reason that I remembered your earlier statement—that Allah will one day question you about how you managed the resources and trust of the people of Kano. That reflection is what moved me to write this letter. I may not have the opportunity to meet you personally, but I believe that sincere supporters who wish to see your administration succeed will, God willing, ensure that this message reaches you.

I therefore urged the governor to review the performance of key officials across ministries to ensure that the vision of his administration is effectively implemented.

May Allah continue to guide you in the discharge of your responsibilities.
May Allah bless Kano and its people with continued peace, stability, and prosperity. Ameen.

Yours sincerely, with prayers for your success and for the honorable completion of the responsibility the people have entrusted to you.
