…As NDLEA Commander Blazes Out of Kano After Historic, Record-Shattering Drug War Victories, more blazing era ahead.

Alfijir News – The outgoing Commander of the NDLEA Kano State Strategic Command, ACGN AI Ahmad, has formally handed over leadership to CN Dahiru Yahaya Lawal, marking the end of a transformative four-year tenure marked by sweeping reforms, major seizures and record-breaking convictions.

Speaking during a press briefing in Kano, Ahmad described the moment as both emotional and significant, noting that he will assume a new role as Deputy Director, Directorate of Assets and Financial Investigations.

“It is with profound gratitude and a deep sense of duty that I stand before you today to hand over the command of the NDLEA Kano State Strategic Command to CN Dahiru Yahaya Lawal after years of service”

Reflecting on his tenure, Ahmad recalled assuming office in February 2022 with a clear mandate: to curb the supply and demand for illicit drugs across the state. Through intelligence-led operations, community engagement and strict enforcement, the Command arrested over 3,000 suspects, securing multiple high-profile convictions. Among them were the 12 notorious Filin Idi drug dealers who together bagged 41 years in prison, as well as a 2025 landmark case that fetched 33 years of combined sentences for four major traffickers, including one dealer sentenced to life imprisonment.

He highlighted “Operation Hana Maye” as a turning point in Kano’s anti-drug campaign. The operation dismantled several trafficking networks, arrested more than 400 suspects, and seized large quantities of illegal substances. Overall, the Command intercepted more than 25 tonnes of assorted drugs during his administration, including a single haul of five million tramadol tablets. Ahmad further revealed that 15 tonnes of seized drugs were publicly destroyed, and more than five cannabis farms were uncovered and eradicated.

Beyond enforcement, the outgoing commander emphasized the success of prevention and sensitisation campaigns. The “Catch Them Young” initiative, he said, penetrated schools, communities and vulnerable neighbourhoods, equipping youths, parents and teachers with drug-abuse awareness tools. According to Ahmad, these efforts have contributed to the steady decline in drug-related cases in Kano—once among the highest nationwide since 2018.

He described the recent elevation of the NDLEA Kano State Command to a Strategic Command as a major milestone that expands the Command’s operational responsibility and strengthens its ability to tackle evolving drug-trafficking threats. Ahmad expressed deep gratitude to the Agency’s Chairman, Brig. Gen. Mohamed Buba Marwa (Rtd.), Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf, security agencies, NGOs, traditional leaders, and media organisations for their unwavering support to the War Against Drug Abuse.

As he steps into his new national assignment, Ahmad called on stakeholders and residents of Kano to extend full cooperation to the new commander. “I call on government agencies, security services, civil society, faith and community leaders, the media and all citizens to extend the same cooperation and support to CN Dahiru Yahaya Lawal.

He noted that the fight against drugs is a collective responsibility, not the duty of one officer or institution. “The torch is passed, the mission continues, and with unity of purpose, Kano will remain on the path to a safer, drug-free future,” he said.
