Former president IBB reconnects with his roots builds hospital, repairs family home in Kano village

Former Military President Ibrahim Badamasi Babangida has rekindled ties with his ancestral home, Kumurya village in Bunkure Local Government Area of Kano State, by pledging to build a hospital and reconstructing houses for his relatives.

Kumurya, a serene community under Rano Emirate, came alive on Sunday as residents trooped out to witness the foundation-laying ceremony of the hospital, which is a promise Babangida made nearly three decades ago.

Represented during the event by General Halliru Akilu, the former leader described the gesture as a tribute to his lineage and late wife, Maryam Babangida. “This project is a fulfillment of a promise made 27 years ago. General Babangida is proud of his roots in Kumurya, a village with a rich and historic past that predates colonialism,” said Akilu.

According to him, the idea for the hospital emerged after Sheikh Ibrahim Khalil, Chairman of the Kano State Council of Ulama, visited Babangida in Minna and mentioned the lack of a healthcare facility in Kumurya. The former Head of State immediately pledged to fund the construction.

Akilu explained that while it took time for the promise to materialize, Babangida had made previous attempts to support the community, including efforts to build a mosque and an Islamiyya school.

Similarly,, the Emir of Rano, Dr. Muhammad Isa Umar, lauded the former leader’s commitment to his roots, calling the day a “historic one for the emirate.” He said, “Kumurya played a key role during the ancient wars against Ningi Emirate. It is heartwarming to see a distinguished son of this soil return to uplift his people.”

Moreover, the Village Head of Kumurya expressed gratitude, revealing that Babangida is also rebuilding Gidan Jefau, the ancestral mud house of his uncles, to preserve family heritage.
