As concerns mount over the disbursement of the ₦330 billion Social Intervention Fund, stakeholders are calling for accountability and transparency.
The Federal Government’s announcement of the fund’s disbursement to 8.1 million Nigerian households has sparked intense scrutiny, with many questioning the criteria used to select beneficiaries.
We note with deep concern the recent announcement by the Federal Government that ₦330 billion has been disbursed to 8.1 million Nigerian households under the National Social Safety Net Programme. While such interventions are laudable in principle, critical questions remain unanswered.
The Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs, Disaster Management and Social Development, together with NASSCO, must immediately provide Nigerians with full disclosure on:
1. Registration Process – How were beneficiaries identified, screened, and verified? What criteria were used?
2. Geographical Distribution – How many beneficiaries are in each of the six geopolitical zones, each state, and each local government area?
3. Grassroots Breakdown – What are the numbers at the ward, town, and village levels, where poverty bites hardest?
4. Transparency of Disbursement – Who exactly received the ₦25,000 per household, and how can the public verify this claim?
It is unacceptable that such a colossal sum of taxpayers’ money could be spent without publicly available data that demonstrates inclusivity and fairness. Most often, such programmes are shrouded in secrecy and end up benefitting only selected sections of the country, leaving millions of genuinely poor Nigerians excluded.
We therefore call on the Honourable Minister to immediately publish a comprehensive beneficiaries register, disaggregated by geopolitical zones, states, local governments, wards, towns, and villages. This is the only way to assure Nigerians that this intervention is not another conduit for corruption or sectional favouritism.
Until such transparency is provided, Nigerians will remain skeptical of the government’s sincerity in alleviating poverty.
In light of this, a pressing question arises: what does the future hold for transparency in governance?.
