In a span of just two years, President Ibrahim Traoré has revolutionized Burkina Faso’s economy, agriculture, and infrastructure, setting a new standard for African leadership.
Since taking office, Traoré has implemented bold policies that have yielded impressive results, earning him widespread acclaim across the continent.
Burkina Faso’s GDP has grown significantly, from approximately $18.8 billion to $22.1 billion. Traoré’s government has also paid off the country’s local debts, a remarkable achievement that has freed up resources for development projects ¹.
In a move that has resonated with many Africans, Traoré has rejected loans from the International Monetary Fund (IMF) and the World Bank. He boldly declared, “Africa doesn’t need the World Bank, IMF, Europe, or America.” This stance has positioned Burkina Faso as a beacon of self-reliance and sovereignty.
Traoré’s government has prioritized agriculture, distributing over 400 tractors, 239 tillers, 710 motor pumps, and 714 motorcycles to boost production and support rural stakeholders. This effort has led to significant increases in tomato, millet, and rice production, with tomato production rising from 315,000 metric tonnes in 2022 to 360,000 metric tonnes in 2024.
The government is constructing new roads, widening existing ones, and upgrading gravel roads to paved surfaces. A new airport, the Ouagadougou-Donsin Airport, is expected to be completed in 2025, further enhancing the country’s connectivity and economic integration.
Traoré has also taken steps to promote cultural pride and sovereignty. He banned the wearing of British legal wigs and gowns in local courts, introducing traditional Burkinabé attire instead. Additionally, he expelled French troops from Burkina Faso and banned French media, signaling a break from the country’s colonial past.
As President Traoré marks two years in office, his achievements serve as a testament to the power of visionary leadership and the potential for African countries to drive their own development and growth.
