Federal Government of Nigeria has introduced a nationwide free cesarean section initiative to address high maternal mortality rates.
Announcing the program at the Joint Annual Review, JAR, in Abuja, Health and Social Welfare Minister Prof. Mohammed Ali Pate outlined that cesarean sections and essential maternal care would now be available at no cost to eligible women nationwide, especially in areas with elevated maternal death rates.
Prof. Pate explained that the initiative—backed by the National Health Insurance Authority, NHIA, and the National Primary Health Care Development Agency ,NPHCDA,—targets local government areas where maternal mortality exceeds 50%. Many women in these areas face obstacles to receiving care, such as financial challenges, lack of awareness, and cultural constraints.
“Our goal is to ensure that every Nigerian woman has safe, skilled access to maternal healthcare,” Pate said, highlighting the program’s focus on closing existing gaps in the healthcare system.
The initiative also aims to strengthen maternal health at the community level by partnering with state agencies and training health workers to improve primary healthcare quality. As part of President Tinubu’s health agenda, the program seeks to provide immediate support through free procedures while building long-term capacity among healthcare providers.
“This is not just about reducing maternal deaths,” Pate stated, “but about empowering Nigerian women with essential healthcare and knowledge for safer pregnancies and childbirth.”
Nigeria has one of the world’s highest maternal mortality rates, largely due to limited access to healthcare in rural areas and high out-of-pocket costs.
